Institute of Ideas Education Forum Election Statement

April 19th 2010

We published this short statement after a long deliberation about how best to argue for positive reforms of education. This marks a turning point in the work of the Education Forum. With the demise of New Labour there is now a space for new ideas!

Sykes Review The Sir Richard Sykes Review published by the Conservative Party

24th March 2010

I sat on the committee that drew up the report for Sir Richard Sykes after he was commissioned by Michael Gove to review schools examinations. The spirit of the review was to raise the expectations of pupils in the state system. This is something I fully endorse. It will be interesting to see how far Michael Gove and his team can go in implementing or taking on board the spirit of the finished report.

I have been a physics teacher in state secondary schools in Britain since 1987. I currently run a successful physics department at Graveney School a comprehensive school in Tooting, South London.

I am a passionate defender of academic science education. I wrote a highly critical response to the new GCSE science curriculum "What is science education for?". The education reformers are determined to impose relevance onto school science lessons. In my opinion this is a denial of a sound science education to a generation.
